# A free Willow Voice alternative for Mac
Willow is a polished dictation app. It tidies up what you say, learns how you write and works on your Mac, your PC and your iPhone. Saypad is narrower: it types your own words, does the recognition on your Mac and costs nothing. Willow's details below come from its own site, checked 10 October 2026.

## Where Willow is better

- You want the app to edit for you. Willow says it removes filler words, fixes punctuation and formats as you go, and that it learns your tone over time.
- Willow Scribe lets you describe a message roughly and get finished writing back. Nothing like that exists in Saypad.
- You switch between a Mac, a Windows PC and an iPhone. Willow runs on all of them, and its blog says your vocabulary follows you across devices.
- You're buying for a team. The Business plan adds admin controls, an enforced privacy mode, SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance.

## Where Saypad is different

Recognition always happens on your Mac, so there's no mode to remember to turn on. Saypad goes online only to fetch the larger model, look for updates and send anonymous usage counts, and you can switch the counts off.

It also works the moment it's installed. A Whisper model is inside the 187 MB download, so your first dictation needs no internet. A more accurate 874 MB model downloads in the background and takes over when it's ready.

- There's one plan, and it's free. You get the same model on day one and day one hundred.
- Every dictation is kept with its audio. You can replay it, copy the text again or search for something you said last week.
- After pasting, Saypad reads the text field back and tells you if the words didn't land.
- Names and jargon go into Vocabulary as spelling hints, with fixed replacements if you need them.

## Switching from Willow

Give push-to-talk to one app at a time and add the names you use often to Saypad's Vocabulary. Expect your text to read the way you speak. Saypad won't reword a rambling sentence, so read an important email once before sending.

## Questions

**Is Willow Voice free?**
There is a free Basic plan. Willow's pricing page says it includes unlimited dictation with what Willow itself calls a weaker speech model (Frontier Mini), limited personalization and 20 Scribe uses a week. Pro costs $15 a month, or $12 a month if you pay yearly. Saypad has no paid plan at all.

**Does Willow work offline?**
Willow lists an offline mode that runs on your device, and its blog says you switch it on in settings on Mac and iPhone. Otherwise Willow processes speech on cloud servers in the United States. Saypad never needs the internet to recognize speech.

**Will Saypad clean up my ums and change my tone?**
No. Saypad adds punctuation and capitals and leaves your wording alone. If you want spoken thoughts turned into a tidy email, that's what Willow is built for.

**Are you neutral?**
No, we make Saypad. We took Willow's details only from willowvoice.com, and below we say where Willow is the better choice.
